Babbitt bearings are a type of plain bearing that uses a soft metal alloy called Babbitt as a bearing surface. These bearings are commonly used in high-speed, rotating equipment like compressors, turbines, and large electric motors. Babbitt metal, typically an alloy of tin, antimony, and copper, provides a low-friction surface that reduces wear on the rotating shaft.

There are many types of Babbitt bearings. Examples include:
Self equalizing bearings
Sleeve bearings
Thrust bearings
Tapered bearings
Tilting shoe bearings
A self equalizing bearing can adapt to different angles and accommodate varying loads. A sleeve bearing operates on the principle that the rod that fits a shaft rests upon a very thin layer of lubricant during rotation. Without a thin layer of lubricant between the rotating shaft and sleeve, the bearing material would wear away from the friction. A thrust bearing can cope with thrust along the axis of the supported shaft. Tapered bearings are used in pairs to accommodate axial thrust in either direction. A tapered bearing may also be used with radial loads.
Aluminum Tin (AlSn)
For oil-lubricated machines, AlSn bearings may provide a drop-in replacement for babbitt bearings, increasing temperature and load capability in the same bearing envelope.
Polymer
Engineered polymers combine higher strength at elevated temperatures and higher fatigue strength than babbitt with embedability and conformability comparable to babbitt’s.
Ceramic / Cermet
Ceramic and ceramic-metallic composites further extend load and temperature capabilities. Given their superior strength and hardness, ceramics and cermets can be used in applications with process lubrication.
Babbitt bearings are a type of bearing composed of a white metal alloy such as tin, copper, and antimony. They are designed to provide a bearing surface between two parts in contact with each other to reduce friction and wear. the operation of a Babbitt bearing is surprisingly straightforward. Any bearing must produce little friction to function effectively. A revolving item rotates more easily the less resistance it encounters.

Craftsmanship Process
Bearing shells are restored by melting out the original Babbitt material. The grit is blasted from the shells. The bearing shells are inspected and immersed in a 100% molten tin bath to assure a good bond for the new Babbitt.
The prepared shell is placed into the casting machine prior to spinning.
Special machines are used to spin-cast bearings. These machines employ bottom draw pouring furnaces and inert gas pressurization of the cavity being cast. This guarantees an oxidation free environment for molten metal.
When the centrifugal casting process is used, all virgin Babbitt is securely suspended on the walls of the shell, which yields a completely void-free casting and superior grain structure for extended wear and reliability.
After the bearings are cast, they are proof-machined and ultrasonically inspected for bond integrity.
City Machine Technologies, Inc. in-house manufacturing of new shells, new labyrinth seals, tilting pads and oil seal wipers complement our ability to restore virgin bearings to new condition. All Babbitt used is virgin ASTM B23-49 Grade 2 tin-based metal with certification.
